Melanin skin colors, protects from harmful uv rays. #1 cause skin cancer exposure to sun, tanning beds. All skin surfaces, gradually along with other systems. Inspection, palpation (texture, temp, abnormalities, pain back of hands bilaterally check circulation if needed), olfaction to assess function/integrity. Turgor is not normal collarbone or back of hand. Most at risk neurologically impaired, immobile, orthopedic, chronically ill, low cardiac output, diabetics. Melanoma: aggressive form of skin cancer, primarily in light-pigmented people. Dry skin avoid hot water, harsh soaps, drying agent i. e. alcohol; use super fatted soap, pat rather than rub after bathing, moisturizers regularly to reduce itching and drying. Varies from part to part, person to person. Normal pigmentation: ivory/light pink ruddy pink in white skin, light/deep brown/black. Most common in sun-exposed areas, frequently occurs in background sun damaged skin. Assessment color starts skin not exposed to sun (i. e. palms of hands) Unusual color hues best seen in palms, soles of feet, lips, tongue, nail beds.
