Wildlife conservation-the wise use of natural resources (wildlife) in our environment. Wildlife management-science and art or manipulating wildlife populations or habitat to achieve a pre-defined goal. Reduction in native american density = increase in wildlife abundance. 1608- french explorers began to establish trading posts. 1620s-english and dutch begin to exploit wealth of natural resources. 1630-bounty on wolves to protect deer in massachusetts. 1748-south carolina traders shipped 160,000 buckskins to england. Wildlife was an economic resource to be utilized. Passenger pigeons once numbering 5 billion were on the verge of extinction. Deer, turkey, and beaver were nearly extinct. 1871-5 million bison were killed for meat, skins, tongue, etc. 1886-540 bison left in the us; yellowstone area. 1930-report of the committee on north american game policy. 1934-migratory bird hunting and conservation stamp act passes. Increasing or decreasing food, cover, space or water. Background: elk were extirpated in eastern us by 1880.
