EAPS 11100 Lecture 19: EAPS 11100 - Lec19
Drainage Basins
1. Smaller channels are tributaries
2. Tributaries spread out discharge over time
3. Types of networks
a. Dendritic (most common)
b. Radial
c. Structurally controlled
Watershed vs Drainage Basin
1. Watersheds
a. Associated with individual river systems at convenient
political/management system
b. Most common unit of analysis for land managers
c. Useful for Pollution control, water supply, etc.
2. Drainage Basins
a. Mapped to overall geography, raindrop to base level
b. Better unit of analysis for understanding hydrology, flood hazards.
River shape
1. Profile along length
2. Curves and bends
3. Cross section profile
a. Terraces, Levees
Base Level
1. Lowest level to which a river can erode: base level
2. High above base level = more erosion.
3. Closer to base level = less erosion.
4. Sea level is the ultimate lowest base level.
