EAPS 10200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Particle Velocity, Universe Today

Document Summary

These building blocks of matter were primarily hydrogen and helium: these new elements had a lot of excess energy and began to move away from the center of the big bang with high velocities. New force came into play that acted to attract particles to each other. Hydrogen atoms are essentially one proton and one electron and as gravity was causing them to clump together the electrons were stripped off leaving just the protons. A proton has a positive charge and we know like charges repel each other. So, two forces competed with each other; gravity pulling the protons together and electrostatic force pushing them apart: the more protons that gravity attracted the stronger the gravitational pull became. In fact, gravity overwhelmed the electrostatic repulsion and protons began to be crushed into one another. When and if the mass of protons become large enough they begin to fuse together forming a helium nucleus.
