It may seem improbable but solid rocks can actually be bent or deformed, geologists call this folding. Folds in rock can be very small sometimes called micro-folds or very large, miles or tens of miles across. Stratigraphy: stratigraphy is a word that describes how rocks are layered. Sedimentary rocks are a type of rock that is derived from igneous rocks. Igneous rocks cool and solidify directly from magmas: when they are weathered (broken up) and eroded (transported) by wind and water these sediments are deposited in water usually oceans. It is often these layered rocks that are deformed and folded: sediments are deposited in water, usually oceans or what are called epi-continental oceans. These oceans are usually very calm so that when the sediments are deposited they form very consistent, horizontal layers over large areas. Since these sediments are different types of rocks they can often be seen quite readily.
