Edci 325: big books from little voices- reaching high risk beginning readers. Theory behind this says: what a child thinks about, a child can talk about, what a child can talk about, can be expressed in writing, anything a child writes can be read. Fluent readers decode words automatically: teachers should help children replicate this by having them repeatedly read the same material, repeated shared readi(cid:374)g of e(cid:374)larged te(cid:454)t i(cid:373)proves childre(cid:374)"s flue(cid:374)c(cid:455). An integrated approach: read the original story to the children several time, also, have the children interact with the story in other ways like having discussions and dramatizing the story. This creates more interest in the story and helps them internalize it: record the childre(cid:374) e(cid:374)gagi(cid:374)g i(cid:374) (cid:862)readi(cid:374)g(cid:863) the stor(cid:455). Isolate the target words on the page of the big book. Next, introduce word saving and word using activities. Introduce sentence slotters so the children can put together sentences.
