Purpose of interaction (small talk vs interview) Expectancy violation- noticeable deviation from norm, something is off. Nature of violation (what kind, how clear) Reward valence- reward benefits of violation, do you like the interaction status, ability, beauty, communicator style. Ex: group project looking for smart, competent, attractive people for reward. Sometimes meaning of behavior is clear regardless of who. Behavior violates > shift of attention > interpretation/evaluation > violation valence > response (arousal) (com reward valence) (behavior, judgement) Attractive appearance did better when close/far distance. Sloppy appearance did better when normal distance.
