Document Summary

Made of 2 chains, a light chain and heavy chain that are held together by disulfide bonds. Each chain have a variable region near the tip and a constant region near the base. Main variation of amino acid sequence is in the variable region. The variable region of the antibody will bind to the antigen. First way is neutralization which coats the virus in a substance that keeps it from binding to cell receptors. Second way is binding to pili or flagella so it cannot move or attach to other surfaces. Third ways is agglutinin which binds to antigens and clumps them all together making it easier for your body to recognize and prevents motility. Just like c3b, antibodies are also opsonins which they can make it easier for phagocytes to take up antigens. Fifth way is the complement activation which follows through the classical pathway to cause inflammation, and lysis of foreign cells.
