ANSC 23000 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Afferent Arterioles, Abdominal Cavity, Efferent Arteriole
Document Summary
Nephrology: study of the physiology and diseases of the kidneys. Kidneys: in mammals are bean-shaped organs that lie in the abdominal cavity attached to the dorsal wall on either side of the spine. The bigger the animal the more nephrons it has. Thicker in diameter to build up pressure within bowman"s capsule. Efferent arteriole: brings blood out of the glomerulus. Glomerulus: tuft of small blood vessels called capillaries located within bowman"s capsule within the kidney. Four functions of the kidney: filtration: first step in making urine. This secretion is caused mainly by active transport and passive diffusion. These include the nitrogenous wastes urea, from protein catabolism, and uric acid, from nucleic acid metabolism. Renin: enzyme made by the kidneys when it senses low blood pressure and promotes angiotensinogen 2. Left kidney is kidney-shaped while right kidney is heart-shaped right kidney is flattened and ellipsoidal whereas the left kidney is thicker at the caudal end than the cranial.
