Topic of the day = why: realistic conflict to modern prejudice. Prejudice arises when groups compete for the same limited resources. When you"re fighting over something specific, you tend not to like the people you"re fighting against. Wars over territory; they are stealing our jobs. Robbers cave experiment (sherif et al. , 1954) Boys in summer camp were divided into 2 groups arbitrarily, called the. Stage 1: ingroup formation (create a sense of ingroupness. Groups were separated and lived together with their group only. Had the boys only hang out with people of their own group. ) Stage 2: competition phase (had a series of summer camp competitions between the groups so that each group was fighting to win the camp trophy at the end of the summer. ) Stereotype outgroup as being more negative (e. g. , sneaky, stinky) and ingroup as being more positive (e. g. , brave, friendly) Integrated groups and had the boys live together.
