This research is usually focused on the spoken modality. Not as much research about different modalities (i. e. , speech and sign) Benefit of a deaf person being bilingual is an assumption. Geers 2017 makes too strong of a claim. If you study only deaf kids immersed in asl but also struggle to read, write, and speak, then maybe asl has a negative influence on spoken acquisition. Can"t really make any definitive decisions about that based on what geers found. Medical professionals encourage hearing parents to teach their hearing children sign language, because it helps them in their spoken language acquisition. Medical professionals discourage deaf parents to teach their deaf children sign language, because it hinders them in their spoken language acquisition. Baby signs are very popular because babies often have greater control over their hands than over their mouth. Easier to communicate with babies through signs. There is no true asl dictionary in and of its own right.
