LIN 310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Deaf School, Deafblindness, Oralism
Document Summary
Many deaf people who grew up in nyc used oral programs. Many deaf people in maryland go to the maryland deaf school, which is a top bi-bi program and emphasizes asl. Black asl is very different from white asl. Teachers used to teach white deaf students in an oralism tradition. Teachers thought black deaf students weren"t capable of learning to speak, so they taught them only asl. Ironically, this meant that black deaf students actually had access to more education than white deaf students! Means you use your body to communicate, and emotions. Example: if you were describing a big fish, someone who is deaf-blind can"t tell how big it was.
