Characterized by unusually severe or prolonged disturbances of mood. Five or more symptoms present during same 2-week period; represent change in functioning. Full remission occurs at a characteristic time of the year (e. g. , depression begins in fall & remits in spring) In last 2 years, 2 episodes have occurred seasonally. Episode(s) have onset during or after pregnancy (peripartum; postpartum is after delivery only) Depressed mood for most of the day, more days than not, for at least 2 years. Presence of 2 or more of: disturbed appetite disturbed sleep low energy or fatigue low self-esteem. In the majority of menstrual cycles, at least 5 symptoms present in week prior to menses, with improvement within a few days of onset & minimal/absent in week postmenses. Presence of at least one major depressive episode. A distinct period of abnormally & persistently elevated, expansive, or irritable mood and persistently increased goal-directed activity or energy lasting at least 1 week.
