Freud: states of excitation in body (instincts or drives) are source psychic energy. Instincts and drives are in the body and mind: psychic energy is purely biologically based, situations determine whether we act on these drives. Life instinct: libido: about the drive to preserve the organism and reproduction of the organism. Death instinct: thanatos: an organism also has the drive to return to an inorganic state. Used hypnosis on patients: physical symptoms for no medical reason (now called conversion disorder, suggestibility determines ability of the ease to be put under hypnosis. Free association: say whatever comes to mind, believed to be a way to get at unconscious material.
