Week 9- measuring the mental - tuesday: a thought experiment. Flat people on sphere with mile diameter. People living in the circle universe infinite outside people- not infinite: the general worry. If there is a difference between: the entities, activities, and processes. And: the things scientists can observe and interact with. Then we are faced with certain questions: how should we go about theorizing, what can we be scientifically justified in asserting, ways of thinking about measurement. Realism: measurements (classifications, etc. ) track or at least purport to track real- world properties. Conventionalism: measurements are a tool that we adopt for practical reasons (simplicity, a sense of beauty, etc. ) Conventionalist structure we can get when we use specific method and accords to other controls and measures: can rule out others but overlapping images. Two (or more) of the following, each present for a significant portion of time during a 1-month period (or less if successfully treated).
