The ashikaga family controlled japan from 1392-1573. 132-1467 was the flowering of ashikaga influence and culture. Fostered the arts -- linked verse poetry, n drama, tea ceremony, and flower arranging. Later, disputes arose among other daimyo which culminated in the nin war of 1467- Originally a shinden-style villa called kitayama-dono belonging to the saionji family. Shogun ashikaga yoshimitsu took it over in 1397 and planned a monastic retreat with 2 gardens, 2 pagodas, and a pavilion overlooking the lake. Originally only the ceiling of the upper story was gilded; thus called the golden. Original structure was burned in 1950 by a crazy acolyte protesting the commercialization of buddhism after wwii. When it was rebuilt, the builders took the name literally and decided to cover the surfaces of the upper stories with gold leaf. Similar to buildings seen in paintings from the song dynasty. Yoshimitsu may have received drawings for the building from a zen monk who traveled to china.
