Document Summary

Blood vessels & arterial blood pressure (lecture 12) Cardiac output (resting conditions) ~ 5 l/min - that"s the flo(cid:449) Blood vessel structure: arteries under high pressure, so needs a lot of substance (strong) vessel wall. Wall made of smooth muscle & connective tissue: arteriole major source of resistance. Made of smooth muscle: capillaries equilibrate nutrients & waste. Made of only endothelial cells: venules & veins low pressure conduits getting blood back to heart. Vein has smooth muscle: endothelium: single layer of lining of all vessels. *rbc are 7 microns in diameter, so just barely fit through capillaries. *wbc are 14-15 (cid:373)i(cid:272)ro(cid:374)s, so do(cid:374)"t fit through capillaries. Metarterioles and arterio-venous bypasses: small arterioles/large capillaries that allow wbc to pass to go to venules: also not surrounded by smooth muscle. Endothelium: endothelial cells serve many functions, the vascular endothelium is more than just a passive lining, endothelium is a dynamic contributor to vascular regulation.
