Basic quesion what prevents unrestricted growth in natural populaions. Density independent rates such as birth rate and death rate. Y axis is per capita rates and the x axis is density rate orange line is the per capita birth rate. Other grey line is the death rate one. The point where they cross is the equilibrium point. Now we should examine the stability by perturbing the system. If we move the density down from this point, then the death rate is higher than birth so the populaion dies. If we move it up from this point the birth rate is higher and always goes to ininity. So this doesn"t answer our quesion what prevents unrestricted growth in natural populaions. Now if we did another random graph for some reason where we have 2 horizontal lines where birth rate was higher, you would always go to ininity so that doesn"t answer our quesion.
