Leonard wooley: archaeologist who studied the death pits (1927-1928, not very good at pr, making his discoveries less famous than other similar discoveries, found the death pits of ur. 16 royal tombs dating 2700-2350 bce early dynastic period roughly in the middle of the city. Near a ziggurat that was reconstructed in the 80"s currently look about the same as they did to wooley. Phases of the deathways: first phase: The domed chamber where the royalty was buried. Placed the royal body in the coffin (bier) added grave goods often gold or silver. Not buried alive; were killed before burial seal tomb chamber: second phase: Procession into pit involving the court, soldiers, servants, musicians, etc. Brought grave goods including chariots, carts, wooden chests, cauldrons, etc. Music (harpists with their harps have been found) Unsure of how they died: recent studies show that a sharp instrument was driven into some of the skulls.
