Document Summary

Greeks and romans confined the word comedy to descriptions of stage-plays with happy endings. An error done in ignorance without bad intent. Ridiculous rather than pitiful and fearful as in tragedy, i. e. antigone. Aristophanic comedies have a more elaborate structure than the typical tragedy: the chorus is also larger. Incongruity is one of the main elements of comedy and humor: ex: walking in with a large erection and a little baby. More likely to laugh in a group people share laughter as a social bond. Comic relief humor reduces stress and fight or flight reactions. Superiority theory of laughter us vs. them bonding: making fun of someone else with a group. Key & peele obama and luther"s farewell address: obama"s anger translator, satire is often aimed at people with power. Often a means for provoking or preventing change. Exaggerates real-life situation to examine its faults.
