SOC 119 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Stereotype Threat, Sunnah
Document Summary
The united states is arguably the most culturally diverse country in the world. It emphasizes our strength as a nation as a whole. However, sometimes, when there is tension, it also exposes many of our weaknesses as a nation. Some of our weaknesses through diversity exist in the definition of stereotyping and stereotype threat. Stereotype threat can be defined as a situational predicament in which many people are at risk or perceive themselves to be at risk of conforming to negative stereotypes about their given social group. Stereotype threat can produce a number of unfortunate consequences. Some of these consequences include decreased performance of a group or of an individual, internal attribution for failure, reactance, ironic effects, self-handicapping, task discounting, and distancing oneself from the stereotyped group. In islamic culture, many men chose to wear a turban-style headdress. This act is often to emulate muhammad, who is believed to have worn a black or white turban.
