Involved impairments in (1) social communication (2) social interaction (3) restricted, repetitive behaviors/interests. Dsm views these issues as existing on a continuum, or spectrum. Autism: significant problems communicating and intellectual disabilities. Asperger"s disorder: intelligence and communication are near normal range, but some symptoms are present. Those with asd have a wide range of deficits in communication. May be mute or speak in an atypical manner (stereotyped language) Dysprosody: subtle disruptions in the rate, rhythm, and intonation. Lack of make believe (especially with others) Impairment in nonverbal social behaviors, eye contact, facial expressions. Visual attention gravitates to movements and sound, rather than socially- relevant stimuli (e. g. eyes, emotional expression) Ex: 1 year old w/o autism looks at eyes of another person, but with autism , looks at mouth. Lack of spontaneous shared environment with others. Ability to recognize others" emotions and respond to them well. Some of those with asd have difficulties with theory of mind.
