Treatment may be improved by intervening earlier (prodromal phase) Early indicators that suggest patient has or will develop schizophrenia. 1) must distinguish between those who have schizophrenia and those who do not. 2) must be a stable characteristic over time. 3) should identify more relatives of schizophrenia than general population. 4) should predict future development of schizophrenia in the non-diagnosed. Subtle patterns of disturbed thinking and social withdrawal (not helpful) An inherited trait b/w having the gene & its full expression. Differences in cognitive performance, such as working memory. Ability to maintain & manipulate information for short periods of time.
