Frustration of needs for affiliation and competence pain. Must have ability to carry out lethal self injury (lose fear of death) People work up toward lethal attempts gradually. Suicide is sought out to solve a problem by ending consciousness. Most suicidal people are ambivalent about suicide. Wish they could die, but also wish for another solution.
