● Obsessions
○ Repetitive, unwanted, intrusive cognitions
○ Thoughts, images, or impulses
■ Impulse example: client like he needed to
destroy his hands
○ Lead to an increase in anxiety
○ Usually include socially unacceptable themes:
■ Sex
■ Violence
■ Contamination
■ Immoral or religious taboos
● Almost everyone has intrusive disturbing thoughts
sometimes
Symptoms: Compulsions
● Compulsions
○ Repetitive behaviors or mental acts used to
reduce anxiety
○ Typically considered senseless or irrational by
client
