PSYCH 212 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Personal Distress, Dsm-5, Adaptive Behavior
Document Summary
According to the harmful dysfunction model by. Jerome wakefield, mental disorders must meet 2 criteria: Causes harm to a person as judged by. Inability for some internal mechanisms to perform its natural function/purpose. 1) a syndrome of disturbances in thought, emotion, or behavior. 2) distress or disability in social/job activities. 3) reflects a dysfunction in mental processes. 4) not an expectable response to common stressors or culturally sanctioned response to a particular event. 5) not primarily a result of social deviance or conflicts with society. Someone has to meet all of these criteria. 1) disorders develop over time and may be prevented. 2) impairment requirement means disorders are treated only after they become very severe. Could"ve intervened earlier if started treating earlier. Doesn"t show clear symptoms until later on. Adaptive behaviors are beneficial in a specific context, but may be maladaptive (not useful or counterproductive) in another.
