Document Summary

Objectives/key terms and ideas: important: all these terms are from the textbook only. Average sleep time and number naps/napping patterns for a 5yr old. Most us children average about 11 hours of sleep at night by age 5 and give up daytime naps. About 1 in 10 parents or caregivers of preschoolers say their child has a sleep problem. Sleep disturbances may be caused by accidental activation of the brain"s motor control system or by incomplete arousal from a deep sleep or may be triggered by disordered breathing or restless leg movements. Most cases are only occasional and are usually outgrown. Some sleep issues may be the result of ineffective parenting practices that exacerbate rather than ease the problems. Persistent sleep problems may indicate an emotional, physiological, or neurological condition that needs to be examined. A child who experiences sleep (or night) terror appears to awaken abruptly early in the night from a deep sleep in a state of agitation.
