PSYCH 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 20: Classical Conditioning
Document Summary
Relatively permanent change in behavior or thought due to experience or practice. Learning to make an involuntary response to a stimulus other than the original natural stimulus that normally produces the response. Wasn"t studying psychology but the digestion of dogs. Unconditioned- this is what happens naturally, no training or learning took place. Unconditioned stimulus- a naturally occurring stimulus that leads to an involuntary response or reflex in pavlov"s original experiment, this was the food. Unconditioned response- an involuntary response to an unconditioned stimulus in pavlov"s original experiment, this is the dog salivating. Neutral stimulus- a stimulus that has no effect on the desired response in pavlov"s experiment, this was the bell prior to the conditioning process. Conditioned stimulus- a stimulus that becomes able to produce a learned reflex response by being paired with the unconditioned stimulus. The bell was rung and then food was presented. Conditioned response- a learned reflex response to a conditioned stimulus.
