Document Summary

The body doesn"t shut down when you are sleeping. Voluntary muscles are paralyzed during rem sleep but not nrem. This is so we don"t act out in our dreams. This could potentially cause harm to one or another if it didn"t occur. Sleep walking only occurs during rem sleep. The average sleep cycle is 90 minutes with more and more of that becoming stages of rem at the end of each cycle. This is why it is important to get enough sleep, to achieve an appropriate amount of rem sleep. Rem behavior disorder (rem sleep behavior disorder) Voluntary movements are not stopped during rem. Can cause harm to themselves or others. Medication can be successful in treating it. Doesn"t have to be present at birth, can develop over time. More likely to occur after a period of sleep deprivation. If sleep is increased, it is often seen that sleep walking decreases.
