PHIL 014 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Carpentry
Document Summary
Love is the only satisfactory answer to the problem of human existence. This love is a compound of maturity, self- knowledge, and courage. To develop this type of love we must meet these demands: we need practice and concentration, we need genuine insight and understanding. Fromm names three premises that are used either singularly or in combination. Premise 1: love is being loved, and not the capacity to love. Sets up the problem of love as how to be loved, how to be lovable. He argues what most people in our culture mean by being lovable is essentially a mixture between being popular and having sex appeal. Premise 2: love is the problem of an object, not the problem of a faculty. This view says love is simple, but finding the right object to love or to be loved by is hard!
