-- Why do we care Nutrition:
1. Nutrition profoundly affects health;
2. Too much or too little nutrients will cause health loss, including decrease in
living condition and increase in the risk of getting sick;
3. Long-term nutrients habit can have thorough effects on body metabolism as
well as operation.
-- What motivates our food choices: Cultural traditions and social values revolve
around food and many facts other than nutrition drive our motivation on choosing
food.
1. It tastes good;
2. Food choices are highly Personal-Related:
i. Personal Preference: Certain preference of tastes like sweet or salty;
ii. Genetic Inheritance;
iii. Ethnic Heritage, Tradition, and Costume;
iv. Habits from childhood -- habits can changed over the lifespan;
v. Body weight and images: Men and women have different visions on their
bodies so different nutrition plans would be applied on them respectively;
3. Social Interactions/Social Pressure;
4. Availability: They are present in the environment and accessible to you;
people would less likely to be picky on food choices when there are only few
food available;
5. Cost: Regard of the financial level;
6. Emotion: Boredom, depression, anxiety, stress and many of the emotional
disturbances can affect our food choices;
7. Positive and Negative Associations;
8. Advertisement: The media have the capacity of persuading people to consume
food;
9. Values: Religious beliefs (like the Muslin refuses to eat pork), political views
and environmental concerns can all influence food choices;
10. Nutrition and Health Benefits: Functions of foods provide us different benefits
to stay healthy.
-- Importance of Nutrients and Malnutrition:
1. The nutrients in food support growth maintenance and repair of the body;
2. Deficiencies, excesses and imbalances of energy and nutrient bring on the
disease of malnutrition, which can take a toll on health over time;
3. A well-chosen array of food supplies enough energy and enough of
each nutrient to prevent malnutrition.
