Document Summary

Massage: do not massage around a pressure ulcer to stimulate blood flow. Medications for the skin come in sprays, creams, ointments and some dressings have these incorporated into the gauze. An incision is a surgical opening of the skin (a cut made into the body, usually with a knife or scapel) Incisions can be sutured (with sutures), stapled (with medical grade staples) or left open to heal from the inside out. Incision care is ordered by the physician and should be practiced with sterile technique. There are three major problems that can occur with a closed incision. Depends on physician orders, often, the physician consults the wound care nurse for optimal dressing and irrigation. Irrigation is usually done at the bedside and done gently. Too much force in the stream of irrigant can disrupt granulation cells. Not enough force in the stream will not dislodge slough. Fancy term that means to clean a wound and remove slough, dead tissue.
