Document Summary
L1-introduction to turbomachinery: an idea and some history: The objective of turbomachinery is to add to or to extract energy from a flowing fluid. If the wind is blowing, it is easy to realize that it exerts a net force on trees, houses, pieces of papyre, camels, sand, etc. The ship moved gracefully in a low friction medium, namely the water of the nile. (it would not have moved well in the sand) These rigs (square sail) could only go downwind, but for a few degrees. The gradual advent of the triangular sail (jib) eventually allowed moving against the wind, as illustrated in fig 1. 2. As the relative velocity of the wind is changed by the sail (w1 to w2), a component dw of velocity is introduced. The net force acting on the flow is then in the direction of dw, and it is responsible for the change in direction.
