KINES 321 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Situation Awareness
Document Summary
Chapter 17: concentration: our information processing capacity (short-term memory) is limited, environment typically has more information than we can attend to at a single time, therefore, we must be selective with our attention. Four components of concentration: selective attention, maintaining attentional focus, situation awareness, attentional shifting. Attentional selectivity involves including some stimuli while excluding others. Four attentional selection styles exist: broad external, broad internal, narrow external, narrow internal. Athletes must be able to shift their attentional style during a single task: be: assess, ni: rehearse, bi: analyze, ne: perform. Attentional selection can be driven by conscious or unconscious process. Common selection error includes : focus too broad, drawn to irrelevant stimuli, unable to shift focus effectively.
