Big declines in time wives spend on housework: 42% decline. Men increased time spent in housework: 1. 4 hours to 6. 7 hours per week. Good news: men increased their housework. Bad news: women still do twice as much as men, change has stalled since 1985. Allocation of tasks an outcome of bargaining. Person with most leverage in bargaining is the person with most resources . The most tangible resource is earnings: some evidence for this. Gap in housework remains: even for those couples where husband"s and wife"s incomes are similar. 2) time constraints explanation: key idea: Determine who has the most available time. Wives still do more household work: example: Wife cooks: household labor is divided on basis of cultural norms about proper gender relations. If women believe they should be responsible for: cooking, cleaning, etc. They will behave accordingly because it affirms their womanhood. Cultural scripts still have control over us. Same for men: how couples make decisions.
