How parents accomplish these goals varies by: historical context, social context, cultural context. Old model: emphasized differences from white middle-class individuals, criticism: Tended to imply that differences were really deficiencies. Today: emphasize that parenting practices that differ from white middle class reflect: 1) cultural beliefs and practices from home country. Slaves brought with african culture with them: emphasis on extended family traditions and networks.
