HD FS 312W Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Fetus, Apache Hadoop, Verificationism
Document Summary
The quest for truth : the philosophical basis of empirical inquiry. Authority: accepting knowledge because person of authority claims it"s true. Bad results (ex: war/following what authority figures say) A priori: accepting knowledge based on reasoned argument. Ex: makes sense, alcohol makes you sick, so when a pregnant woman drinks she"s also making the fetus sick . Based on reasoning/logic, but reasoning not always right. Experience: using personal experience to say it"s true. Ex: my cousin drank heavily during pregnancy & her baby was developmentally delayed. None of them are objective/all allow multiple truths. Ex: the data have led us to this conclusion . Truth can only be derived from direct observation (verificationism) Assumes that the world described by science is the world as it really is. Relies on measurements that aren"t affected by personal bias & are well-defined & specified. Interpretation is based on objective results of observation. In other words, data tell you the results.
