Neglectful parenting style low on compassion, attention, control/demandingness. Children referred to cps for neglect: lower cognitive abilities, academics. Chaos in the home distracts from schoolwork, bodily deficits, parents aren"t staying on top of them/no expectations, delayed language development, growth not stimulated by love: worse physical health consequences. Failure to thrive, higher risk of disease (like diabetes from processed foods), lack of sleep: internalizing and externalizing behaviors. More susceptible to being bullied/bullying others (externalizing), anxiety and depression (internalizing: less liked by peers. Never learned to have healthy relationships, externalizing behaviors are a turnoff for peers, parents are not teaching the right social skills. Evolution, frontal cortex as a dependent variable: our biology responds to environmental demands that help us to use parts of our brain more often.
