Document Summary

As a species, we are very adaptive. Each child grows up in their own microenvironment. We are constantly changing to survive; climate, parenting style, diet: ex: dr. kollat"s children when they came home from the orphanage and eating habits/food. Ecological systems theory: bronfenbrenner, 1983: traditionally, we believed a unidirectional environment affects a child, bidirectional- the relationship is not one sided, the child is also able to affect and change their environment. Example: temperament is the base of a child"s personality. Easy tempered children- easy to give high quality care. Difficult tempered children- much harder, can lead to low quality parenting: hierarchical systems: how we quantify environment more precisely, microsystem- closest to the child; daily life. Most developmental research is done here: mesosystem- connections between microsystems. What happens in one microsystem effects another. Example: bad day at school causes someone to be moody at home: exosystem- not typically in daily life but affect the child.
