Identity: the way we view and feel about ourselves. Own perceptions about achievements and comparisons to others. Identity development is complex and multi-faceted > a series of interrelated developments. Sense of identity: the sense of who you are, where you"re from, where you"re going. People move through 8 psychosocial stages of development during the life cycle. The crisis associated w/ adolescence is the development of a coherent sense of identity. Not everyone is able to experience the type of moratorium that is ideal for healthy identity development. Healthy identity: sense of well-being, a sense of feeling at home in your own body, a sense of knowing where you"re going. Ex: hs senior who is graduating and not thought about what he wants to do. Premature commitment to a role or series of roles without sufficient exploration or experimentation. Ex: college student who made up her mind about becoming a doctor at age 13.
