Prefrontal cortex - biggest in humans than other species. More crashes, crimes, attempt suicide, drown more often. Need to find a mate, but there are predators and competitors. Dopamine: neurotransmitter when anticipating something like food etc. Experiment: adolescent mice drank more when w/ friends than alone, while adults drank same amount alone & w/ peers > the peer effect. Expect inconsistency in responsibility taking and in decision making. Able to think about options, possibilities, logically, and hypothetically (what if?) Think about how they feel and what they are thinking. Think about how they are perceived by others. Don"t take it personally when teens discount experience. Psycho-social development: identity, autonomy, intimacy, being comfortable with one"s sexuality/achievement. Develop own principles of right/wrong (ex: sex values) Practice social skills, and become intimate w/ friends. How educated/exposed to sexuality largely determines if healthy sexual identity develops. Mixed messages contribute to teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Mobility and mortality rates increase 200% bc risks.
