Science: human activity of nding order in nature by organizing scattered meaningless facts under universal concepts. Theories: set of assumptions that attempt to describe, predict, or explain a phenomena. One needs a blueprint to build a house, one needs a theory to have a science. Categories of developmental theories: psychoanalytic: emotions & con ict, behaviorism: observable behavior, cognitive developmental: thoughts & information processing, ecological: settings of development. Development is unconscious and greatly affected by emotion. Outward behavior is not as important as inner workings of the mind/subconscious. All decisions made by instinct. (seeking pleasure/ reduce discomfort) > shoulder devil: ego. Decisions are made using reason, balancing id and superego (ask for water: superego. Decisions are made based on conscience. Oral stage: infant"s pleasure centers on the mouth (birth - 1. 5 years) Anal stage: child"s pleasure focuses on the anus (1. 5-3 years) Phallic stage: child"s pleasure focuses on the genitals (3-6 years)
