Document Summary

Had its roots in slavery times though. Gospel is blues and christianity soul and r&b too. Had roots in new orleans really old place very cultural (spanish/american/african etc. ) We don"t get the impression that they were progressive though because black residents of new. Orleans had more wealth and influence here than anywhere else in south. The people who created it didn"t call it jazz, the white people made it that. Also because it was all invented in the night scene where drinking and gambling was the entire scene. It was criticized like any new music form always some sort of racist angle to it. European musicians though, loved that music and thought it was most originally american. Record companies knew it would do better with white people performing it so they"d get black people to write it but whites to perform it. This was all appropriation blacks received no compensation for their music.
