Post-war prosperity allowed for the democratization of adolescence. Everyone except the very poor at this point had a car. Teens + money + free time = trouble. Video games literally prevent use of drugs etc. Very well represented the teen angst of the time. Loads of these poets were homosexual/bi illegal at the time. At the time, san francisco was v. affordable. Growing sense of alienation among teens in the 50s was the cultural bedrock for the student movements of the 60s. Group who were prominent in the city: the diggers. Wanted to get rid of profit motive and give everything away for free. The way they paid for all the free stuff was through their extensive pot sales.
