Lack of parental warmth (authoritarian, neglectful) tends to be associated w/ difficulty making commitments. Lack of parental encouragement of individuality associated w/ lack of exploration. Each of us has multiple identities that may be more or less important depending on the context we find ourselves in. Limitations on exploration in love and work higher for girls in traditional cultures than for boys. Globalization is impacting identity formation precesses for young people around the world. Ethnic identity has been studied in african-american, hispanic, Assimilation: adopting the majority/host culture"s norms/standards while rejecting those of one"s own native group. Separation: associating only w/ members of one"s own native culture & rejecting majority culture. Biculturalism: maintaining ties to both the majority/host and the minority cultures. Identity development usually not established before age 18, but rather continues on into emerging adulthood. Identity development does not appear to be systematic > there is no normative path. Peers: groups of people who are roughly the same age.
