EDPSY 014 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Long-Term Memory, Metacognition

14 views2 pages

Document Summary

Information that has been in long-term memory is not lost; there is a retrieval failure. We conclude this because if we re-teach the information, the person learns it much faster: not a problem of encoding, but a problem of retrieval. Retrieval failure more rapidly: lack of use- if we use things, the axons get thicker and the thought can connect. With lack of use, the axons get narrower and harder to connect. Interference- the new learning blocks retrieval of the old information thoughts: proactive interference. Trying to remember french but can only remember spanish. Learning a new language makes you forget the word in the other language. For the test: make up examples and put some dates there. Better encoding: think about how long term memory is constructed, organize information. Going beyond encoding: we remember the things we use more frequently. You can influence it in different ways. A way to intentionally manipulate your attention.
