Sometimes it"s the same judge in every phase, but it can be different. Public defender: paid by county, handle cases for people who are poor. Contracted public defender: has own legal practice in addition to being a public. Counsel: appointed to a time consuming case (ex. Homicide: pd or contracted pd don"t have time for long cases. Defense counsel: paid and hired by the defendant (cid:2) (cid:2) (cid:2) (cid:2) Jurors answer a questionnaire before coming to jury selection. Voir dire: judges conduct this over the group, makes sure the jury is not bias. Sequestration: jury is isolated from the general public during trial.
