Created itself anew out of the wilderness. Gun ghter- mobile hero who is ambivalent about what society brings to the west. Often he remains outside of society at the end, refusing to assimilate or compromise. He is the bringer of justice by way of his guns. Cowboys- rid horses, deal with cattle, protect them from villains, come to town for that which town represents (both good and bad) Indians- symbols of the wild west as represented in dime novels, the dangerous wilderness. Very stereotypic representation in early days and later revised. Town: features of characterization, an outside main street for gun ghting.
