CSD 462 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: 18 Months, Chief Operating Officer, Intentionality
Document Summary
Learning language: learning to talk is a relatively orderly process. Kids learning any language generally progress through the process in a similar sequence of events. Environment does not really have an impact on that. Regardless of language and culture, kids all learn language in a similar process: newly acquired skills are used to modify and augment existing language abilities. As you learn new skills you modify and expand the language that you use: new abilities are based on earlier learned skills. Just like you learning to add and subtract before you learn to multiply and divide. Ex: learning single words is foundational for combining words: the process is one of refinement, expansion, and extension (length of utterances) The cool thing about language development is that regardless of your thoughts about the process, the content and order are the same regardless of the language or languages being learned.
