Backflow is caught by the pulmonary valve and it snaps shut. Blood enters the left atria via the pulmonary vein. This blood is returning from the pulmonary circulation and is oxygenated. The biscuspid valve is open and blood passively fills the left atrium and left ventricle. Next, the left atria contracts to top off the left ventricle. Next, the left ventricle contracts and forces the bicuspid valve shut. The left ventricle continues to contract and forces the aortic valve open. The left ventricle relaxes and blood is momentarily sucked backwards. Backflow is caught by the aortic valve and it snaps shut: the second heart sound is heard: dubb. Heart sounds are produced by valves: a stethoscope is used to detect heart sounds, trained cardiologists can appreciate the sound of each valve closing by listening in the highlighted spots.
